HI,

First, let me say that I don't have the PC on which this is occurring yet. I will be working on it in the next couple of days, but I want to have some troubleshooting ideas when I go in. I won't be able to bring the PC with me; I'll have to do the troubleshooting at the location where the computer is installed.
This is a PIII 800 MHz system with 512mb of RAM running Windows XP Home. I am the one who performed the clean install of XP Home & it has all Windows updates & is configured for performance. The owner uses it for Internet access, Quicken & basic business applications like Word & Excel. When I finished the clean install of Windows & applications, the performance was pretty good, considering the age & hardware level of the system.
Now, several months later the owner is complaining of poor performance, specifically an extreme delay in desktop function. The most noticeable symptom is that there is a significant delay in letters appearing when he types in Word. He will type a short sentence & then look at the screen to see the letters appear slowly, one-at-a-time well after he has finished typing. There are other symptoms, but all are desktop functions, like it taking a long time after double-clicking an icon for the program to launch, etc.
I had this same issue on one of my PCs a while back & it was due for a cleanup anyway, so I just backed up my data & did a clean install of XP, so I never figured out the cause.
Where should I look to see what's causing this? In my case, there wasn't anything out of the ordinary in Task Manager & CPU utilization appeared well within normal ranges.
This PC is running Symantec Antivirus version 10.something & is on a wireless LAN behind a Linksys router with 3mb DSL. The Windows Firewall is on & as far as I know, Symantec Antivirus hasn't detected anything out of the ordinary.

Any help will be apprecited.
